Works by W. A. Mozart with La Croche-Chœur

To mark its 25th anniversary, the vocal ensemble La Croche-Chœur from La Chaux-de-Fonds presents a Mozart programme, with Die Freitagsakademie as orchestra.

The works reveal very different sides of Mozart, from childhood to maturity: he wrote the Veni Sancte Spiritus at twelve and the Miserere at fourteen. The latter is unique in his output, composed entirely in the style of Palestrina after his encounter with Padre Martini in Bologna. Martini’s teaching also shapes the Misericordias Domini, yet here Mozart’s own voice is unmistakable.

The Litaniae de venerabili altaris Sacramento K. 243, written for the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, is a mature work although Mozart was only twenty: its nine movements alternate tender choral and solo passages, an almost operatic tenor solo, moments of mystery and drama and a solemn double fugue.
